Croatia

Before the dissolution of Yugoslavia, the Republic of Croatia, after Slovenia, was the most prosperous and industrialized area, with a per capita output perhaps one-third above the Yugoslav average. The economy emerged from a mild recession in 2000 with tourism, banking, and public investments leading the way. Growth, while impressively about 4% for the last several years, has been achieved through high fiscal and current account deficits. The EU accession process should accelerate fiscal and structural reform.

In Croatia television is a predominant source of information. The state-owned television is the leader by audience on the national level. In production of newspapers there is a steady decline. The four largest daily newspapers, struggle for readership – and advertising – with sensational news stories and photos, and promotion prizes. The pressure to be more ’commercial’ discourages good investigative reporting. The magazine market is led by feminine magazines and the top ten weeklies include six women’s magazines.
